Yo Yo Yo...It's Time To Celebrate the Yo-Yo

That's right everyone...June 6th is National Yo-Yo Day!

It is this day that we give thanks to the Yo-Yo and celebrate this historic toy.

Did you know that the yo-yo is considered the second-oldest toy in history? It is believed that the yo-yo was first invented in ancient Greece and was made of wood, metal and terracotta and decorated with pictures of the gods.

Today’s yo-yo consists of an axle connected to two disks, usually plastic or metal, and a length of string looped around the axle.  It is played by holding the free end of the string, allowing gravity or the force of a throw to spin the yo-yo and unwind the string, then allowing the yo-yo to wind itself back again.

Now if you haven’t yo-yoed before…this Saturday would be a great day to try it out. Get yourself over to the toy store and purchase your very own Duncan. Cause really…when you think yo-yo, is there any other brand? We’ll answer that one. NO. Also…fun fact…in 1999, the Duncan Yo-Yo was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Betcha didn’t know that.

In an effort to help get your name listed in the National Yo-Yo Museum, we have found a few websites that will help you learn the basics of yo-yoing.

Thursday, April 10, 2014 - Legit or Legend
Photo Provided by braceface.wikia.com

So we all know someone who has a friend who has a cousin who knows a guy...so the story must be true.

Oh those Urban Legends and how we love to believe them all. No...we aren't talking about mixing Pop Rocks candy with Coca-Cola, we're talking about the Urban Legends surrounding the Orthodontic World...you know, the really scary ones.

There are many legends and myths about orthodontics, some of which have become so commonplace that they are now believed to be legitimate. Well...guess what? Even if you know the guy who has the cousin who has the friend that the story happened to...it's legend.

Legend: Only children and teens need to visit an orthodontist.

Legit: Braces are not just for kids. More and more adults today are seeking the benefits of a beautiful, healthy smile. In our practice 30% of all orthodontic patients are over the age of 21. The oldest patient that Dr. Lenz has treated was 82 years young. Health, happiness and self-esteem are vitally important at any age.

Legend: Braces interfere with radio signals and electronic devices.
Legit: In theory any metal can act as an antenna, but braces are really bad ones. Radio signals are modulated electro-magnetic waves transmitted through the air. In order for these transmitted signals to travel well in air, they must be sent at high-frequencies. This is achieved through modulation. Even if someone's tooth could receive these frequencies, it would have to be decoded to actually hear real messages.

Legend: Braces are just for cosmetic purposes and aren’t necessary for your overall dental health.

Legit: While braces can definitely help you get that beautiful smile, they aren’t just for cosmetic improvement. Well aligned teeth can facilitate good oral hygiene making it easier to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. In addition, resolving certain orthodontic problems with the use of braces can improve your ability to speak, chew, and even breathe.

Legend: Wearing braces will increase your chances of being struck by lightning?
Legit: The chances of a person getting struck by are the same, with or without braces. In the U.S. in any one year, the chance you will be struck by lighting is 1 in 700,000 no matter what you are wearing.

Legend: If there was a giant magnet overhead, anyone who is wearing braces would get stuck to it.
Legit: Braces are made of materials which are non-magnetic in nature. Therefore getting stuck to a giant magnet is highly unlikely...and really, where is this giant magnet anyways?

So fear no more...Orthodontic Urban Legends are just that...Legends.
No matter what your friend's cousin's brother says.

Oh...memories like the corners of our minds. Thanks to everyone who follows the Lenz Orthodontics blog. You keep us inspired!

Tell Mom to Relax

Image provided by rockpaperscissorsshop.com
Mother's Day is just 4 days away. Tell mom to "relax" this Mother's Day with an amazing gift basket filled with everything she will need to have a spa day right at home.

Gift baskets of all styles and themes can be purchased online or in any downtown boutique, but why not put a little thought into it and make the basket yourself? A basket filled with everything you know your mom will love. Candles, Bubble Bath, Scrubs, Lotions, etc. Creating your own custom gift basket is very easy to do and most of the items can be found at any drug store.

While most items needed to create the swankiest of spa baskets are readily available, we think the best things in life are handmade. And you know your mom will be amazed when she finds out that not only did you put together the basket, but a few items in the basket are actually handmade.

Sugar Scrubs are a great way to exfoliate and wake up tired skin. This Vanilla Brown Sugar Scrub smells yummy and is just the thing mom needs to kick off her day of relaxation. To make this scrub all you need is a little sugar, sunflower oil and some vanilla...and in about 10 minutes you have a gift that can't be purchased at any store.

This Handmade Body Wash is great and will leave mom smelling like she’s been tanning all day on the beach.  It’s super easy to mix…with only three ingredients that you can easily find in your kitchen or in the natural section of your grocery store.

Give Mom what her skin is craving with this amazing Handmade Body Lotion. Made with cocoa butter, this lotion smells like chocolate covered oranges. The recipe is pretty basic and you should be able to substitute any essential oil to make a number of great smelling body butters… chocolate mint, chocolate banana, chocolate strawberry…whatever you think Mom will love best.
